How to Replace Your iPod Battery

You can pay Apple to replace your iPod battery, or you can save big bucks by doing it yourself.
Step 1: Buy new battery
Go online and buy a new battery from a site like www.newertech.com. Make sure you get the correct battery for your iPod. Start with your iPod off and the ‘Hold’ switch engaged.
Step 2: Pry open
Pry open the iPod. Wedge a flat piece of durable plastic between the two sides—a guitar pick works well—and gently work it along the sides until you can feel the tabs holding the case together. Unclip them by poking them inward.
Warning
If your iPod is less than a year old (or two, if you bought the extended protection plan), opening it will void its warranty.
Step 3: Separate
Separate the two sides, taking care not to sever the thin ribbon cable joining the two parts.
Step 4: Remove hard drive
Carefully remove the hard drive—it is the part sitting on a piece of blue rubber—by lifting the socket of the cable that connects the hard drive to the board.
Step 5: Remove battery
Remove the battery using your wedge, taking care not to touch the circuit board underneath.
Tip
Pay attention to how the battery is connected so you can reattach the new one the same way.
Step 6: Disconnect power cord
Disconnect the battery’s power cord from the circuit board. The wires may be wrapped around or under the circuit board; if so, gently pull them free with your pick.
Step 7: Wrap power cord
Attach the new battery’s power cord and wrap it around the edge of the circuit board in the same way as the old cord.
Step 8: Attach new battery
Insert the new battery, then reattach the hard drive connector and the hard drive.
Step 9: Snap back
Snap or screw the two sides of the iPod back together. Recharge your new battery for at least three hours—then enjoy your tunes once again.

Great video. the pick worked like a charm everthing was as the video demonstrated… these guys that broke thier ipods must have used a hammer duh!!!! These machines are not meant for hamfisted people with no soft tech skills

Sorry to say i think this is missleading. Some models like the iPod Touch i have might be more complicated to take apart, and may actually need special tools and some care about issues. The "iPod Touch 2G/3G Battery Replacement Repair Guide" video was of greater help for me.

depends how much music you have to listen to. I've got a 30 gig ipod and I'm having to delete stuff now to add more music. I'd never survive with only 8 or 16 gig

I recommend people with the 6th generation iPod- just use a docking station to use your iPod classic. I have tried for hours to separate the cases- all I've done is bend it out of shape. as soon as a tool pops out, the thing snaps together. I wasted my time and money!!

So apparently my battery had swollen out of proportion and was preventing the click-wheel from being able to click. Took a bit of effort but I managed to get the lid off with some old tweezers and a credit card. Jammed the tweezers in the side until they opened up a space then jammed the credit card in and slid it around the edge. No problem. I don't have a replacement battery so I just took it out and closed it all back up again. THe only problem now is that it won't connect to my macbook. I plug it in and on the ipod's screen I see a black and white charging symbol, but it just flickers and goes no where. I guess you need a battery to be able to sync it? Anwyay, it works great when connected to my dock speakers! I use it to play ambient sounds like rain and thunder 24/7

Well in NYC there are reasonable cel phone repair stores
$30 + cost orignal bat all for $80
screen replacement $45-$60
WHY WOULD ANY ONE BE THAT FOOLISH AND LOSE THE WARANTEE BESIDES
AND IF YOU WANT LIKE I SAW DIRTCHEAP SEND AWAY REPAIRS ON LINE

It's not always as easy as it looks on the video. I spent hours trying to prise the case apart and ended up, not only bending the steel backing case, but eventually cracking the ipod screen. So not such a 'cheap and easy' fix after all. The whole things now a write off.
